The treatment has done wonders.
Mariah Carey has opened up about her battle with mental health, revealing to her fans that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2001.
According to PEOPLE, she was hospitalized at the height of her fame after suffering a mental breakdown.
“I didn’t want to believe it. Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she told PEOPLE magazine.
Carey goes on to say that she has finally sought treatment after years of struggling.
“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”
The singer originally thought her issues stemmed from a sleep disorder, but quickly realised this wasn’t the case.
“For a long time, I thought I had a severe sleep disorder, but it wasn’t normal insomnia and I wasn’t lying awake counting sheep. I was working and working and working … I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania.”
Carey then explains that through therapy and medication, she has found a healthy balance in her life.
