The Queen Marks What Would’ve Been Prince Phillip’s 100th Birthday With New Commemorative Flower

2 min read

The Queen has commemorated what would’ve been Prince Phillip’s 100th Birthday with the planting of a commemorative rose named in his honour.

The newly bred, pink “Duke of Edinburgh” rose was presented to the Queen in honour of what would’ve been Prince Phillip’s landmark 100th birthday.

According to Buckingham Palace, the rose has been planted at the rose border of the East Terrace Garden at the Queen’s Windsor Castle home.

Prince Phillip played a huge part in the transformation of the East Terrace Garden, helping to restructure the garden and commissioning the bronze lotus fountain which now sits in the centre of the garden.

The rose was presented to the Queen last week by the President of the Royal Horticultural Society, Keith Weed, with the Queen saying at the time the rose “looked lovely”.

Mr Weed said it was a delight to give the Queen the rose to mark the remarkable life of her late husband.

“Whilst being very poignant, it was also a delight to give Her Majesty The Queen, Patron of the Royal Horticultural Society, the Duke of Edinburgh Rose to mark what would have been HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s 100th birthday and to remember his remarkable life,” Mr Weed said in a statement,

“The Duke’s devotion to raising public awareness of the importance of conserving the natural world leaves a lasting legacy.”

A royalty from the sale of each of the commemorative roses will go to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Living Legacy Fund, which aims to provide and help more people take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Prince Phillip, who would’ve turned 100 today (June 10), passed away just two months short of his birthday on April 9.
