The reason is kind of mind-blowing.
Today in crazy facts you may not have known, we’ve discovered that Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle cannot have legal custody of their children (current or future).
We know, right?!
Royal expert Marlene Koenig has spoken with news.com.au about the oddity, sharing that the law was introduced back in the 1700s by King George I.
Apparently, the king didn’t have a great relationship with his son so he introduced a law that saw him become the custodian of his grandchildren.
…Which would now make Queen Elizabeth II the legal guardian of George, Charlotte and Louis and any future children Wills, Kate, Harry and Meghan may (or may not – no pressure, guys) have.
And in the case of the Queen’s passing, Prince Charles would assume custody of his grandchildren once he has taken the throne.
The law, which appears to be fairly loosely adhered to, means that final decisions when it comes to the lives of her grandchildren must go through her majesty.
This has been the case since Harry and Wills were young, apparently.
“When [Princes Harry and William] were little, Prince Charles asked the Queen if both children could fly on a plane together to Scotland, to which the Queen said yes,” Koenig told the website.
“Technically, they needed permission for travel. The Queen has the last word on parenting decisions like that.”
