Why Eugenie wanted to show her scar on her wedding day

2 min read

Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress was specifically chosen to showcase a distinctive scar along her upper back.

Eugenie was left with the scar following an operation to correct scoliosis – and a statement from Buckingham Palace confirmed the 28-year-old decided against wearing a veil on her big day to showcase the scar:

“The low back feature on the dress was at the specific request of Princess Eugenie who had surgery aged 12 to correct scoliosis.”

Eugenie told TLC about her touching decision:

“I’m patron [of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital’s Redevelopment Appeal] of their appeal and I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you’ll see on Friday, but it’s a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.

”I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”

Eugenie’s scar was given pride of place thanks to the elegant design of her gown, by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos. She accessorised with Charlotte Olympia heels, and diamond and emerald drop earrings, which are a wedding gift from her groom.

Her tiara, known as the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, was lent to her by her grandmother – Her Majesty The Queen.
