With school holidays here again, and more wet weather pencilled in, it’s a good time to catch up on some great movies.
But one you may want to miss is the new flick from Shia LaBeouf.
Last weekend, ‘Man Down’ opened in the UK and grossed just $8.70.
Yep nationwide.
Only 1 person went to see it.
Now admittedly it wasn’t a huge opening and only one cinema was screening it, but still, a single £7 ticket sale isn’t going to help recoup costs.
The last film to flop so spectacularly was Emma Watson’s ‘The Colony’, which earned just £47 in its opening weekend last year, meaning fewer than 10 people in the UK went to see it in cinemas.
But Watson, and LaBeouf aren’t alone with their box office bombs…Morgan Freeman’s thriller ‘Momentum’ made just £4.60 per screen with a 10-site release, and legal thriller ‘Misconduct’ starring Hollywood heavyweights Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino, only took in £100 in its first weekend, with similar figures in the US and here in Australia.
Luckily there are lot more movies out in time for the school holidays well worth seeing – and the Central Coast has several suburbs with cinemas showing them, including:

Best bet is to check in with your cinema of choice to see what they’re screening and when.

‘Beauty and the Beast’, a much more successful outing for Emma Watson. The latest version of the story of a beautiful young woman– the aptly named Belle– and her venture into the world of the Beast (Dan Stevens). You may have seen the story before, but not like this.

‘The Boss Baby’ – Alec Baldwin voices the smug bub who infiltrates a family on a secret mission that involves babies and furbabies. Lisa Kudrow and Steve Buscemi also lend their voices to the cause.

Rated: G. Very mild themes.

‘Dance Academy’ – follows on from the successful Australian TV series that ended in 2013. Even if you haven’t seen the show you’ll follow the story of a dancer who suffers a spinal injury and is determined to dance again. Stars Miranda Otto, and the cast of the television series slipping on the dancing shoes once more. Aimed squarely at young girls, but family-friendly, although some themes may need some parental guidance, hence the rating.
Run time: 101 minutes
Rated: PG. Mild themes.

‘Kong: Skull Island’ – a big cast meets an even bigger star as King Kong returns for another round. It’s action, adventure and fantasy rolled into one big ape, with some Oscar winners along for the ride.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ – One for the boys and AFOLs (Adult Fans Of Lego). You know what they say: Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Will Arnett voices the Dark Knight in the follow up to the hit flick of 2014: The LEGO Movie. Joined by The Joker, Batgirl, and of course Robin (who apparently has a problem with pants).
Run time: 104 minutes
Rated: PG. Mild themes and animated violence.

‘Logan’ – the last run for Hugh Jackman as his hairy alter-ego. Wolverine joins Professor X for one more outing, as they try to protect future mutants

‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’ – after the previous 2 outings as live action/CGI this is the first fully animated adventure for the little blue folk in years, this one featuring Demi Lovato as Smurfette ( a role previously voiced by Katy Perry) Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, and Julia Roberts as a new blue female.
Run time: 90 minutes
Rated: G. Very mild violence.
Star104.5 Summary: This lot of little critters ‘blue’ the critics away.
And one for children of the 70s and 80s – the return of the crew from the California Highway Patrol – AKA ‘CHiPs’. Ponch and Jon are “new recruits” of the LA highway patrol, trying to survive the street … if they don’t kill each other first. Despite surviving 70s television, this take is faster, harder, and even more cheesy.
Run time: 100 minutes
Rated: MA15+. Strong violence and coarse language.
