This Is The Secret To Keeping Your Tomatoes Fresh

2 min read

Fresher than fresh.

Fresh fruit and veg is a must have in any kitchen. And while they’re good for our health, there’s one downside: they can get pretty old and gross pretty fast. Which can be a problem when we buy one too many tomatoes or bags of cucumbers and have no way to use them before they go bad.

Luckily, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt of Serious Eats has a trick to help us keep our veggies fresh and stop us from wasting a good tomato.

According to Kenji, to keep your tomatoes fresh you need to lock in the moisture. Most of a tomato’s moisture comes from the stem, so storing them upside down on a flat surface can help stop them from going shrively and wrinkly.

But if you don’t have enough room in your fridge to lay out your tomatoes, here’s a helpful hack: cover the stem with a bit of sticky tape. This will prevent the loss of moisture and keep those tomatoes nice and juicy for longer. We love ourselves a handy hack.

We’re going to add ‘buy sticky tape to keep tomatoes fresh’ to our next shopping list. We knew our arts & crafts skills would come in handy one day.
