Goodbye clutter! Goodbye stress!
There is something seriously stressful about throwing out old household items you’ve been clinging onto for years. Whether it’s old cooking utensils, the cat’s pajamas or that pile of rubbish that has sat in the corner of your home for the last five years… we know what you mean when you say it’s hard to say goodbye.
However, new research has come through to support the many benefits that arise at the cost of “Decluttering”.
Decluttering has proven to not only clear more space in the home but also create clarity in the mind whilst improving overall mental health and wellbeing.
However, the new decluttering phenomenon does not merely refer to everyday disposables or throwing out a few old tins of baked beans from the top shelf of your cupboard. Rather, it’s an intensive, long and fulfilling experience that digs deep from the depths of your email bank to the back of the shed.
So here are our top 4 tips to start decluttering:
1. You must start small
Despite the great lengths that you could or ‘should’ go to de-clutter your life, remember to take baby steps. Start with something as little as the cutlery draw and move on to bigger spaces as you ease into the project to avoid getting overwhelmed. Rember the hardest part is starting, and once you get underway it won’t be as difficult as you initially thought. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the collection of the mismatching containers in your pantry!
2. If you haven’t worn it in over a year, chuck it
Prioritise. If you haven’t used the item in the last year you probably won’t in the next seven. Yes, this includes that bag of ‘skinny’ clothes we all have tucked in the cupboard from before we had kids.
3. Containers are your friend, but not an excuse
While you might be tempted to buy twenty storage tubs, pack them full of 20 years worth of stuff, and shove it in the crawl space above the house – it won’t solve the problem. Don’t even go near packing things in containers until the clean out is complete. Now, repeat it with me. “Containers are your friend, but not an excuse”.
4. Think big
Think big! Don’t just declutter one room, call it a day, and wonder off to Kmart to buy MORE clutter! One room per week is fine, but don’t give up on the overall mission!
5. It’s not irreplaceable
Our last and piece of advice is to always remember it’s not irreplaceable. Whether it be a handbag, a pile of collectible spoons or the old fridge that was hanging around for the last 15 family BBQ’S. Almost anything and everything can be replaced. If you wanted/needed the item that badly you more than likely wouldn’t have considered getting rid of it in the first place. Why do think you have four ‘special’ mugs tucked away in your cupboard?
So….DO TRY THIS AT HOME…Declutter your home today and clear your mind forever.
