5 tips to save $20+ on your weekly shop

2 min read

Let’s save some $$$!

Plan your weekly meals around what’s on sale

Instead of sticking to your old faithful steak and vege every Tuesday, spend ten or so minutes before you head to the supermarkets to find out what’s on sale. This works best with meat, poultry, seafood and fresh produce. This will save you some serious dollars!

Pick the right supermarket

Prices vary quite a bit between supermarkets, and it’s important to pick the best one for what you need. For example, Aldi is great for snacks, dairy products and packaged meats, but tends not to have a wide produce selection. Check out some research on the cheapest supermarket in Australia here.

Always, always, always make a list

It only takes ten minutes, and it can save you some serious coin! In fact, studies show that when we shop without a list we tend to spend up to $50 more on our shops. You can divide your list into categories, or you can even look up what’s in each aisle in your local supermarket online to make a plan!

Avoid recipes with a special ingredient

We’ve all been through it. You find an awesome recipe on Pinterest, write it all down, and when you get to the store, you realise that the weird spiced pumpkin seeds needed for the sauce cost a whopping $10 a pack. Instead, stick to simple ingredients – especially spices – to keep the cost of your shop down.

Bulk buy cleaning and laundry products

It’s always better to bulk buy your cleaning products! You’ll find that the cost to product ratio is more impressive when you buy larger quantities. Invest in the massive tubs of washing powder instead of the 2-3kg boxes, and you’ll see a real difference in the number at the end of the receipt.
