Art Drops: the art movement taking the Central Coast by storm!

2 min read

If you’ve seen a sculpture hidden behind a telephone pole in Erina or perhaps a painting tucked in a hedge in Wyong, you’ve witnessed the newest craze taking the Central Coast by storm.

The Art Drop movement started in Newcastle and quickly spread to Maitland, Sydney, and now to our very own backyard. The movement sees local artists leaving pieces of their work for keen collectors to find.

The artist behind the craze, simply known as ‘Bonzo’, told Nine News that Art Drop is all about the community unifying in creativity.

“It’s not about the individual, it’s not about one artist – it’s about all and everyone in the whole art scene and whole community getting together and being creative.”

Local artists contact Bonzo through the Central Coast Art Drop Instagram to participate. The artist will then hide their work at a designated location, and leave clues on Instagram.

And it’s not only talented sketchers and painters taking part, sculptors and musicians have also been playing hide and seek with some musicians leaving behind whole albums for curious scavengers to find.

According to Bonzo, the Art Drop movement has reignited artists passions and built their confidence more than he could have expected.

“I’ve had people tell me “I can’t believe how many people have seen my stuff, I can’t believe someone actually left their house to get it”, and they are so ecstatic. The confidence it gives the artist is incredible.”

Art drops are held in a new Central Coast suburb every month. If you’re a local artist that wants to be included, contact Bonzo through the Central Coast Art Drop Instagram.

If you’re a scavenger, all we can say is ‘good luck’!
