This Aussie city has been named one of the best travel destinations for 2018

2 min read

We’re kinda surprised, TBH

Well blimey, mate. Lonely Planet has released their Best in Travel lists for 2018 and little ol’ Canberra has taken out third place in Top Cities for the year.

Sure, most Aussies may react to the suggestion of travelling to our Capital City with a resounding: what? , but according to LP, Canberra is hugely underrated.

So much so, that the ACT has landed the highest ever listing of any Australian city on the list.

Not just home to the revolving-door of Prime Ministers, Questacon and the Australian War Memorial, Canberra offers some of Australia’s most impressive food and wine, stunning natural settings (Floriade, anyone?) and a long list of major national attractions (seriously, you gotta check out Questacon, though).

Author of the Guide’s Canberra chapter, Lonely Planet’s Director of Sales and Marketing (Asia Pacific) Chris Zeiher was quick to share his excitement on the announcement:

“Canberra is a bit of a hidden gem that has been hiding in plain sight. Rich with history, culture and entertainment, it offers something for every kind of traveller.

“Recent revitalisation efforts have given Canberra a new lease of life, establishing a truly contemporary and unique sense of style, with boutique precincts emerging throughout the city, bursting with cool bars, cafes and restaurants. With endless family-friendly and adventurous activities, opportunities to connect with nature or indulge in a range of gastronomic delights, along with a smorgasbord of cultural, artistic and sporting events, Canberra should be on everybody’s 2018 travel wish list,” Zeiher said.

If you’re curious about which other cities made the list for 2018, they are as follows:

1. Seville, Spain

2. Detroit, USA

3. Canberra, Australia

4. Hamburg, Germany

5. Kaohsiung, Taiwan

6. Antwerp, Belgium

7. Matera, Italy

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

9. Guanajuato, Mexico

10. Oslo, Norway

Guess it’s time to pack a bag and rediscover the top dog of Aussie cities, no?
