The Australian city that is looking to scrap male crossing symbols

1 min read

They’re set to be replaced with female signs.

Brimbank Council in Melbourne has announced its plans to scrap the male pedestrian crossing with female signs to “improve gender equality”. Mayor Margaret Giudice told the Herald Sun the initiative will “show women and girls that they are important and valued in our community”.

“We know that improving gender equity leads to very positive outcomes for organisations and for our community… research shows societies with greater gender equity have lower rates of violence towards women and children.”

The first crossing to get the new lights will be Perth Avenue and Ballarat Road with the request being submitted to VicRoads this week.

However, Ratepayers Victoria vice president Frank Sullivan said the council was “out of touch” and should be addressing more pressing issues.

“Councillors have got to realise what they are elected to do… they are completely out of touch and they’re moving into things that don’t concern them.”

The push for female crossing signs comes following the installation of 10 lights in Melbourne’s city centre in 2017.
