More than 140,000 people are already being trialed.
More than 140,000 NSW residents will no longer have to feel the pain of forgetting their licences again. They’ll never have to worry about being pulled over, never have to stress about buying a bottle of wine to have with dinner, and will never have to panic about cashing a check.
Why? Because those lucky 140,000 people will now have their licences on their smartphones.
A select group of residents from Sydney’s Eastern Beaches are participating in the new NSW Digital Drivers Licence (DDL) trial with licences available via the Service NSW app.
Participants are able to use the smartphone licence in all of the same manners as a card licence including for proof of identity, proof of age, and for roadside police checks.
Victor Dominello, the Minister for Finance, Service and Property, said that the trial is representative of the new place smartphones have in our lives.
“Smartphones have become defacto wallets and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios.”
According to Dominello, the licence is protected by a pin locked app and is available offline.
Participation in the trial is voluntary, and residents in particular postcodes are able to opt-in. Those that chose to participate must also carry their plastic drivers licence with them during the trial period.
Residents in postcodes 2022, 2024, 2026, 2031, and 2034 are eligible to register.
