Central Coast suburb chosen as launch site for super-fast 5G tech

2 min read

Residents will have access to the new tech by the end of next month.

Optus has announced that a suburb of the Central Coast will be one of the first areas in Australia to receive it’s much-anticipated Optus 5G Home Broadband Service.

The switch on will be taking place in Niagara Park with residents able to access superfast speeds by the end of next month.

According to Optus, residents using the 5G service in the suburb could achieve peak download speeds of 295Mbps, and average speeds of 100Mbps – an estimated 15Mbps higher than the average speeds currently being achieved by the premium NBN plan.

Optus Networks managing director Dennis Wong assured customers that the speeds estimated by Optus had been achieved at other testing sites including Glendenning in Sydney’s west.

Optus is currently testing five different 5G devices including two mobile handsets and three home hubs (CPEs) – all of which will be able to obtain faster download speeds.

While Niagara Park will be the first area on the Central Coast to access the technology, another eight local suburbs will join it by next year.

In March 2019, Optus released a list of the 60 suburbs across the country that would be among the first to have access to the network – nine of which were on the Central Coast.

On the list was Niagara Park as well as Daleys Point, Koolewong, Phegans Bay, Springfield, St Hubert’s Island, Tascott, Woy Woy Bay, and Yattalunga.

It is yet to be announced which Central Coast suburbs will be included in the next round of installations.
