The cheapest supermarket in Australia has been revealed

2 min read

But there’s a catch

CHOICE’s supermarket price survey results have been released and the cheapest of the chains has been named.

The study looked at the prices of 33 (28 of which were packaged) popular items at Coles, Woolworths and Aldi stores and found that Aldi was the cheapest of the three.

The items came to $102.50 at Aldi, $168.74 at Woolworths and $170.54 at Coles, meaning consumers are able to make a saving of approximately $66-$68 in a standard shop at Aldi.

“…it’s clear Aldi is Australia’s cheapest supermarket and it is forcing the big two to compete on price,” CHOICE spokesman Tom Godfrey said on the results, The Daily Mail reports.

However, both Coles and Woolworths were found to stock more home-grown produce and Aussie ingredients in their packaged products.

CHOICE states that Coles and Woolworths have said that 96% of their fruit and veg produce is Australian, compared to Aldi which reports that 91% of their produce is Australian.

Reportedly, of the 28 packaged items purchased, 22 items from Coles had Australian ingredients, 21 items purchased at Woolies had Aussie ingredients and 17 of Aldi’s items had local products.

So, when it comes to your shopping what matters more to you? Low prices or local ingredients?
