Double demerits: Operation Slow Down to kick off tonight on NSW roads

1 min read

Stay safe, guys!

Motorists are being reminded to slow down and use caution on NSW roads over the coming days as thousands of people head on road trips for the long weekend.

‘Operation Slow Down’ will kick off just after midnight on Friday morning with an increased police presence across motorways, highways, and roads across the state. Double demerits will also be in place.

Authorities will be targeting dangerous behaviours such as speeding, mobile phone use, not wearing seatbelts, and driving under the influence – all of which carry heavy penalties.

During Operation Slow Down, speeding could cost you the loss of your licence and fines of up to $3762, while using your mobile phone will result in the loss of 10 demerit points and up to $457 in fines.

If you or any of your passengers are caught not wearing a seatbelt, you’ll lose 6 points and receive a fine of $344, while driving under the influence could result in licence disqualification, a $5,500 fine and a possible 2-year prison term.

The operation officially kicks off at 12.01am on Friday 4th October and will run until 11.59am on Monday 7th October.
