‘Operation Slow Down’ will be in place until midnight Monday.

NSW Police are urging motorists to slow down and drive safely across the long weekend, or face losing their license.

‘Operation Slow Down’ will be running across all of NSW, starting at midnight Friday, September 28th, and concluding at midnight Monday, October 1st.

Authorities will be targeting speeding, drink driving, mobile phone use, seatbelt offences, and helmet offences for motorcycle riders. Double demerits will be in place for all offences.

Drivers are being urged to educate themselves on the newest laws that have just recently been introduced.

Motorist are now required to slow to 40km/h when passing emergency vehicles with flashing red and blue lights. Should a driver fail to do so, they will cop a $448 fine and three demerit points (six points during double demerits).

Harsh penalties have also been introduced for those using their mobile phones while driving. Those caught with their hands on the device will receive a $337 fine and four demerit points (eight during double demerits).

Double demerits will be in place in school zones today.
