Just one soft drink a day can impact your health more than you think

Ok, so we don’t think we need to tell you that soft drinks aren’t great for you. They’re packed full of sugar and drinking them in excess can lead to a long list of health problems (surprise, surprise).

What you may not have known, however, is that as little as one serve per day can have a pretty nasty impact on your body.

As Nine News has reported, a new study conducted by the Cancer Council Victoria and the University of Melbourne has shown that one soft drink a day can increase your risk of cancer.

The study reviewed 3,000 cases of obesity-related cancers over the period between 1990-1994 and 2003-2007 and found that there was a link between cancer risk and the consumption of soft drinks.

Of the study, Professor Hodge revealed:

“These particular cancers are commonly associated with obesity, however, our research found this risk existed for all participants, no matter their size,” he said.

The findings indicated that the risk of cancer increased with higher intakes of soft drinks and interestingly, those who consumed diet soft drinks did not have the same health risks.

Cancer Council Victoria CEO Todd Harper has also commented on the study, stressing that the learnings should encourage people to avoid sugary drinks altogether:

“Sugary drinks, including soft drinks, are already known to be a cause of obesity, which greatly increases the risk of 13 types of cancer,” said Mr Harper.

“And cancer is just one of many chronic health conditions associated with sugary drink consumption- including increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and tooth decay.”
