Someone get me some bread. Stat.

Coeliac disease sufferers could soon find themselves chowing down on some garlic bread, with a vaccine trial starting this week.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Clinic Trials Centre have developed an injectable vaccine that aims to improve the lives of those living with the disease by switching off their immune response to gluten.

The participants will be injected twice per week for several weeks.

The doctor on board with the trials, Dr James Daveson created the vaccine after realising how exceptionally hard it was for patients – not just in terms of diet, but also in terms of expense. Gluten free products can be 35-50% more expensive than their gluten-filled counterparts.

If you want to test this vaccine out, you can apply to be a participant if you’re 18-70 years old, have been diagnosed with coeliac disease, and have been following a strict gluten-free diet for 12 months.
