Meteor shower crossing over Australia will be most visible on Friday night

2 min read

It will be most visible from 9pm.

The Germinid meteor shower – one of the most beautiful and consistent meteor showers visible from Australia – will be at its peak visibility this Friday night.

The shower is already visible to those with the right equipment, but from 9pm Friday the meteors will be able to be seen with binoculars or the naked eye.

These particular meteors have been deemed the most spectacular in the world thanks to their mineral make-up. The minerals in the meteor cause it to flare with brighter colours than most meteors, and its density makes it slower to pass through the sky, meaning it’s easier for the human eye to pick it up.

To get the best view, it is recommended to head away from city lights, and to let your eyes adjust to the darkness for at least twenty minutes to get a reasonable view with the naked eye.

Between 9pm and 5am, experts are predicting over 100 meteors will pass over, with the highest frequency of meteors passing between 2am – 3am.

The meteor shower will also be accompanied by the ‘Christmas comet’ – a stunning green orb of light – which will be most visible on December 17th.
