The most haunting tales from the Central Coast

Ready for some chills?

The hitchhiking woman in white

As the story goes, a young woman was making her way home along Wilfred Barrett Drive between Magenta and Noraville, when she was brutally attacked by a carload of youths. Witnesses claim that with her dying breath she said she would get her own back. No one was ever charged for her death, but it is also said that the men involved all died in mysterious ways. Locals state that they’ve seen her hitchhiking along Wilfred Barrett Drive, and some have picked her up simply to see her disappear in the back seat. There’s even a film about the ghost!

The bereaved mother

The hitchhiking story and this story have somehow become blended into one over the years (there was even a movie – read about it here), but according to reports the ghosts are definitely separate entities. In 1973, four young boys decided to camp for the night at Jenny Dixon Beach. While huddled around the bonfire, one of the boys looked up and saw a ghostly woman dressed in a long flowing dress, similar to the fashion of the 1800s. Scared witness, the boys attempted to throw sticks and stones at her – but they only passed through her form. The story goes that a woman lost her son when he was swept overboard, and she spends the afterlife pleading with people to help find him.

The ambulance station master

According to the station crews at Wyong Ambulance Station, their building is haunted by the old station master who used to reside in the area upstairs. People have seen cups fly off benches, fans move with no wind, felt things brush past their face, and something taps their feet. The night shift is apparently dreaded by the local ambos.

The ghost of Tall Timbers

Although the current owner of the hotel remains skeptical, many have reported seeing a ghostly bride wandering the halls of the Tall Timbers Hotel at Ourimbah. Legend has it that a bridge died on her wedding night in one of the upstairs rooms only weeks after the now 100 year old pub opened.
