The most unaffordable places to rent in Australia revealed

2 min read

Some of these places have a median price of $1400p/w!

We all feel the rental pain – seeing hundreds of dollars of your hard-earned money being withdrawn from your account every week will do that to you.

However, according to a new report, the rental pain is felt a little bit harder in some parts of Australia. And when we say ‘a little bit harder’ we mean a LOT harder.

The latest Rental Affordability Index (RAI) report was released this month, and revealed the top ten most expensive postcodes to rent in Australia.

The report scores suburbs on the rental affordability in an area. A RAI score of around 100 and under means that households would be spending 30% – 70% of their income on rent.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the lowest scoring postcode was where Prince Harry and Meghan stayed on their recent visit to Australia. 2061 received an astonishingly low score of 56. The postcode, which includes Milsons Point and Kirribilli, has an average rent of $1400 per week for a house.

It was closely followed by St Ives, Sydney, which had a score of 58.

Coming in equal third was 2075 and 2009 (Pyrmont, Point Piper, Edgecliff, Darling Point) with a score of 59.

Here’s the full list:

1. 2061 (Kirribilli and Milsons Point). RAI 56

2. 2075 (St Ives). RAI 58

3. 2009 (Pyrmont). RAI 59

4. 2027 (Point Piper, Edgecliff and Darling Point) RAI 59

8. 2024 (Bronte, Waverley)

9. 2095 (Manly)

10. 3187 (Brighton East)
