And it could cost you a serious fine!
A new road rule is set to come into effect on NSW roads this weekend – and you could cop a $448 fine if you don’t comply.
From Saturday 1st September, motorists will now be required to slow down to 40km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle with its red and blue lights flashing. Motorists travelling in both directions will have to follow the rule, unless the road is divided by a median strip.
The rule applies to vehicles from the NSW Police, Ambulance Service NSW, and Fire and Rescue NSW. Drivers are also required to slow if they see State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service, Volunteer Rescue Association and Traffic Emergency Response vehicles.
The rule was introduced to create a safer working environment for emergency workers.
As a part of the new rule drivers will also have to give way to people walking around the emergency vehicle.
Failure to comply with the new law will result in a $448 on the spot fine and the loss of three demerit points. Transport NSW says a maximum court penalty of $2,200 will also apply.
