Did your baby’s name make the list?
In the last few years, we’ve seen some particularly strange names shoot up in popularity. Names like Roulette, Meme, and Beluga (yes, like the whale) were some of the new picks for girls last year, while boys names were equally out of the box with Anarchy, Slayde, and Kulture appearing on birth certificates in 2018.
However, according to new data, you’d probably find it hard to find a Beluga or a Kulture on the streets of NSW, with most NSW heading for more traditional names last year.
According to early reports, traditional names Charlotte, Noah and Oliver were all top contenders in 2018
Looking at the data, the name Charlotte was given to 498 girls, and the names Noah and Oliver given to 321 boys.
Other popular names for girls included Amelia with 451 newborns given the name in 2018, followed by Olivia with 446, Mia with 442, and Ava with 407. Names such as Isla, Chloe, Grace, Harper and Emily were also in the top ten.
Meanwhile for the boys, William was also a popular choice with 293 boys bestowed the name, as was Lucas with 269, and Jack with 268. Other names like Ethan, Liam, Alexander, Thomas, and James could also be found in the top ten.
A final list of the top 100 baby names is scheduled for release in April. While we wait for that, we’re going to spend some time wondering who on earth would name their child Beluga!
