One Australian council has called it quits on recycling

2 min read

Not our yellow bins.

It took years for the yellow bins to be accepted into our homes. Now, they’re almost part of the furniture – occupying a tiny space down the side of the house, in the garage or in the carpark of your apartment block. It’s safe to say that us Aussie’s have gotten used to recycling.

However, the future of the initiative is in question after one Queensland cancel canned the procedure.

News.com.au reports that Ipswich City Council told its residents that it didn’t matter whether they put their rubbish in the red or yellow bin anymore because it was all headed to the landfill anyway.

Mayor Andrew Antoniolli admitted that the council had already spent the last year dumping the contents of everyone’s yellow bins straight into the landfill without the knowledge of the residents.

According to the mayor, the choice to drop the initiative came after recycling contractors told the council they’d be charging an extra $2 million per year.

It has been revealed that Ipswich Council won’t be the only one dropping the scheme, with predictions a large number of other Queensland and New South Wales councils are heading the same way.

The President of Local Government Linda Scott says this comes as a number of councils are desperate for funding.
