Residents in parts of Australia have started to evacuate as forecasters warn that cyclone Owen could re-awaken and reform into a category three system.
Residents in the 1,700km stretch between Cape Shield in the Northern Territory and Burketown in Queensland have been warned to evacuate with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting the cyclone will make landfall in these areas on Friday.
The cyclone, which already affected parts of Queensland in the last few days, is predicted to reform in the gulf.
The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of ‘very destructive winds’, with ‘severe and extensive damage’ a possibility.
Wind gusts have already reached 85km/h in some parts of the area.
The evacuated areas include parts of the states that were plagued by bushfires just a few weeks ago.
