People are freaking out over this Maccas recipe change

If it ain’t broke…

McDonald’s in the US have changed the recipe for their legendary apple pie.

Swapping the crispy layers of deep-fried pastry for a baked crust, and reducing the amount of sugar used in the apple filling, the resulting dessert tastes significantly different to the original, according to hundreds of angry Maccas fans:

 
“⁦@McDonalds⁩ I don’t even know what to say!!! Where’s the green box? Where’s the apple PIE?!! The Franken-Strudel you have offered 2 nite is yet another example of big business sticking it to the common man!! You know what I’m talking about ⁦@Mazzios⁩!!  “- @The_Mr_Lindley

McDonald’s have defended the choice, with a spokesperson saying it’s part of their move towards a healthier menu.

“Our new freshly baked Apple pie recipe is in line with other positive changes we have made.

“We removed, for example, artificial preservatives from our Chicken McNuggets and switched to real butter in our breakfast sandwiches because those changes matter to our guests.

“Likewise, our new apple pie is made with fewer ingredients such as sugar, sliced 100-percent American grown apples and a bit of cinnamon to the filling for flavour to give each one that homemade taste our customers love.”

Many blogs argue that in fact, the pies are still terribly bad for you.

Foodbeast debunked the ‘healthy’ illusion, saying that while the new pies had ditched a lot of unhealthy ingredients, the new pies actually contain MORE sugar than the old ones:

“The wording of the McDonald’s press release was pretty genius and comical, as they managed to convince the food world that their apple pies were somehow healthier, without ever saying that they were.

“The most noticeable change in the ingredients list, is the replacement of high fructose corn syrup with apple juice concentrate, which means they replaced sugar with sugar.”

Maccas Australia has confirmed they will not be making any changes to their apple pies Down Under.

Phew.
