That’s right, if you swear, you’re basically a genius
Some people believe that swearing is a substitute for eloquence, and that using a swear word in the place of (or in addition to) other words makes you unsophisticated.
Well, fear not swearers, researchers at Marist College and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts have found that those who swear a lot tend to have a wider vocabulary and better verbal skills. Of course we do.
Participants were asked to complete a Controlled Word Association Test (COWAT), which measures the size of your vocabulary. They were then asked to use as many swear words as they could in a minute (anyone else keen to give this a go?!).
What the researchers found was that those who swore more actually tended to know more words in general.
What’s more, women are actually leading the charge, with Professor Tony McEnery saying:
“As equality drives on, the idea that there is male and female language, that there are things which men and women should or should not say, is going to be eroded – gentlemanly behaviour and ladylike language should become something of the past.”
F-ing great news.
