Stores ran out of bags within a day.
It’s only been two days since the plastic bag ban began at Woolworths, and tensions are already high at the checkout.
According to news.com.au, there are reports of stores running out of bags completely on the first day – leading to customers walking out enraged, or being forced to use the tiny plastic fruit and vegetable bags.
In the place of the single-use bags, are a range of reusable ones ranging in price and quality. However, customers are frustrated that the replacement bags actually take longer to breakdown, therefore potentially making them more damaging to the environment.
Some customers wrote on Woolies Facebook page, telling Woolies that they had “completely missed the point” of eliminating plastic bags. One poster pointed to Harris Farm who eliminated plastic bags, but replaced them with boxes and paper bags. They then go onto say that if Woolies ditched their “big business attitude” and thought outside the box, then this outrage could have been avoided.
