We won’t miss all those 5c coins hidden under our car seats though.
You know that feeling when the cashier has just handed your change at the checkout, and as you’re trying to stuff it back into your wallet, the next person moves up to be served, and it’s just a big old rushed mess? Well, you won’t have to worry about that anymore.
According to data from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), the percentage of cash payments in the country plummeted from 69% in 2007 to just 37% in 2016 – a drop of 32%.
The website finder.com.au took this data and created a projection that showed that if this current trend continues, Australia will be a cashless society by 2026.
And as the need for cash diminishes, so does the need for ATM’s. The same prediction estimates that ATM’s will be gone from our streets and shopping centres by 2036.
We’re a little bit sad about this…but at least our cashier won’t judge us for being slow anymore.
