According to a secret report obtained by the ABC, high school students who leave school with the lowest scores – some close to zero- are being offered places in teaching degrees.
The report, that was ordered to be supressed, shows that many teaching students had ATAR’s between 0 -19 – a number that is significantly below the Federal Governments official data and university entry requirements.
In fact, the ATAR cut off for teaching in most universities sits around 69 – 90.
According to the report, students who scored in the bottom 50% of the school made up half of all places in teaching degrees.
In 2018, 28 offers were made to students scoring an ATAR of 0-19, 29 offers to those scoring 20-29, and 73 offers to students with an ATAR of 30-39.
The report was made public to the ABC by its author, retired professor John Mack, after the University of Sydney ordered that the report be hidden.
In response to the report’s release, the University of Sydney made a statement in which they said they were “very disappointed” and that it could be a breach of their “polices and processes”. They also stated that they would “take appropriate action” if the report was found to be a violation of their rules.
