Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne says same-sex marriage will happen in Australia “sooner than everyone thinks”.
In a recording obtained by Sky News host Andrew Bolt, Christopher Pyne is heard making a comment on same-sex marriage on Friday night saying it could happen “sooner than everyone thinks“.
The remarks were made at a meeting of Liberals at a Sydney bar. However, in a statement, it’s been denied that Mr Pyne said it was “imminent“:
“The minister said that whilst marriage equality had failed to materialise over the last two years it would become a reality eventually.”
According to the recording, Mr Pyne said:
“Friends, we are in the winner’s circle but we have to deliver a couple of things and one of those we’ve got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country.”
“And your friends in Canberra are working on that outcome.
“It might even be sooner than everyone thinks.”
Before the last Federal election, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said voters would have to say through a plebiscite that they wanted the Marriage Act to be changed. Labor, however, opposed the plebiscite saying it could harm gay people.
Ireland, Spain and the United States have all legalised same-sex marriage, and we really hope Australia follows suit shortly!
