Snake season in NSW slithers in early

2 min read

SNAKE SEASON IS HERE!

Experts are warning people in NSW to be on the lookout for snakes as the states snake season slithers into action earlier than usual.

The Australian Reptile Park says the recent wet weather and warm spring temperatures has brought snakes out early across the state with the season normally kicking off closer to summer.

Head of Reptiles Daniel Rumsey revealed that there has already been a number of snake sightings in the region, and reminded people to brush up on their snake first aid.

“We’ve already seen a few snakes moving around already this year, which means we’re coming to an early snake season,” he said in a video posted to the Australian Reptile Park Facebook page.

“As we go into spring, it’s the season to brush up on your snakebite first aid knowledge and ensure all Australians are doing what they can to coexist with our slithery friends.”

Depending on the type of snake, a bite can destroy blood cells, cause blood clots or cause excessive bleeding. If the bite is left untreated, it can be fatal within 30 minutes, Rumsey warned.

To immediately treat a snake bite, people are told to apply a pressure-immobilisation bandage to entire limb that has been bitten and immediately calling an ambulance or heading to the hospital.

Approximately 3000 people are bitten by snakes every year, with around 300 of them needing anti-venom, and only one or two proving fatal.

Rumsey revealed that the majority of the snake bites that occur in Australia come from people trying to catch or kill snakes in the wild.

The park has also advised NSW residents to prepare their homes and properties for snake season by cutting grass regularly and removing piles of sticks and rubbish, especially items such as tin sheets which offer up a perfect environment for snakes.

“These areas provide a safe-house for snakes as they sit in stealth mode waiting prey to feed, and if startled they will defend through biting.”

The season is expected to continue through to February 2020.
