Retailers are defending the move.

Ceremony, food, booze, and the dress – getting married ain’t cheap. In fact, the average Aussie wedding costs around $51,245, with around $2500 of that going towards the dress.

However, brides writing their wedding budgets should probably add some extra zero’s to their dress budgets so they don’t get a nasty shock when it comes to wedding dress shopping.

According to 9Honey, there’s been a pretty hefty increase in the number of wedding boutiques charging brides to try on their dresses with prices ranging anywhere between $30 – $100 to shop in a store.

One Sydney company charges a $50 initial consultation fee, and states that it’s to avoid brides from cancelling their appointments last minute, especially on weekends when the store is at its busiest.

However, 9Honney suggests that the charge comes as more and more retailers are feeling the pinch from online competitors that can offer up beautiful gowns for half the price.

The average wedding dress costs around $2475, however brides can pick up a similar gown for $200-$600 online.
