This adds to over 100 reported cases of contamination.
Authorities are currently investigating the discovery of a needle in a punnet of Australian-grown strawberries sold in a New Zealand supermarket.
A customer purchased a punnet of Choice brand strawberries from the supermarket chain Countdown which is owned by Woolworths, only to discover needles in the fruit.
This is the first international case of sewing needle contamination on record.
In response, Countdown has pulled all Australian-grown strawberries from supermarket shelves and is advising customers to cut up all strawberries before eating.
“Countdown is in contact with both New Zealand and Australian authorities as they investigate this matter,” a spokesman said.
“Customers can return any Choice brand of strawberries they may have at home to Countdown for peace of mind and a full refund.”
This incident adds to the hundreds of other reported cases of contamination of not just strawberries, but also apples, mangos and bananas.
There is currently a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the culprit.
