Supermoon set to light up Central Coast skies tonight

1 min read

The best time to see it is around 8pm tonight!

Stargazers all over Australia are being told to look to the skies tonight as the brightest and biggest super moon of 2019 appears amongst the stars.

The super moon phenomenon occurs when a full moon is at its closest to earth whilst simultaneously reflecting large amounts of sunlight, resulting in it appearing much bigger and brighter. This super moon is tipped to be 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the average full moon – the best of 2019.

According to researchers at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the moon will be at its biggest at 2.53am on the morning of February 20th. However, the best time to view the moon is when it’s rising at sunset.

“The peak fullness is at 2.53am, but really, when people want to see the bright full moon is when it’s rising,” Dr Brad Tucker revealed.

“The full moon always rises at sunset…. That’s when you get to see it coming on the horizon and the visual effects of it appearing to be bigger look the best.”

Sunset is predicted to occur at 7.42pm tonight on the Central Coast.
