Wesfarmers has announced the scaling back of Target offering across Australia.

News.com.au report that the size and number of stores will be diminished to achieve a 20 per cent overall reduction.

Stores have not yet been identified apart from Highpoint in Melbourne (which will be downsized). The reduction is expected to take place over five years.

Wesfarmers have also announced plans to open between eight and 10 new Kmart stores in Australia and New Zealand each year.

Kmart managing director Ian Bailey spoke about the potential for Kmart to move into the overseas market:

“We do all this work to design and make products for Australia and New Zealand and then we pitch them against the world class retailers who are offering their products all over the world,” he said.

Finally, the organisation announced plans for the Coles brand, including increasing the number of products sold under the brand’s own label.

“The last thing we need to do is push stuff onto consumers that they don’t want,” he said.

“We need to make sure we have the right products with the right quality and right price … we are never going to take away choice.”
