According to Sydney accountants Patrick Sargent and Sid Cachuela, the average person misses out on at least $450 in potential tax deductions each year.
We know what you’re thinking – how could I be missing out on hundreds?
Well, Sargent and Cachuela state that most of us are failing to make job-specific claims.
They even go so far to say that most tax accountants aren’t as well versed in each occupations possible claims, and often fail to ask job-specific questions in the tax appointments.
“When you see an accountant, they’re generally not a specialist in each occupation, so they don’t know what questions to ask – they can be a tick, flick, bash exercise,” Sargent told news.com.au.
The pair, who have worked as accountants for over eight years, have warned those doing their tax online to do their research before lodging online.
“myTax doesn’t give guidance and help – you’re on your own; you don’t know what you should be putting where, and there’s no assistance,” they warn.
