If you thought the coffee on aeroplanes was bad (seriously, don’t drink it), just wait until you hear this.

PEDESTRIAN.TV have blown the lid off the simple act of reaching for your phone and, well… we’ve been shaking in our boots since reading.

The publication point out how airlines like Qantas and Virgin have changed their in-flight safety messages to include warnings not to reach for your phone if it falls between the seats. Instead they ask passengers to alert crew if their device goes AWOL.

Why you ask?

Oh, ’cause it might catch fire and explode.

Peter Gibson, Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s Corporate Communications Manager, spoke to the publication and confirmed the f**king HORRIFYING news:

“Yep, that’s right. All about stopping phones being crushed accidentally and catching on fire.”

“It’s happened a few times around the world,” he added.

“It’s happened in Australia, and the person who’s done it has immediately called cabin crew. In one case, they picked up the phone with tongs and dumped it in a sink full of water. In another case, they got out the fire extinguisher and gave it a blast.”

UK website The Register have previously reported on the same terrifying ordeal including an example from a Qantas flight that’ll shake you to your damn core.

And you thought the whole ‘don’t drop the soap in prison’ thing was bad.
