Terrigal NYE fireworks cancelled

2 min read

Organisers say that the cancellation comes due to financial restrictions.

The 2017 New Year’s Eve Terrigal fireworks display became worldwide news when a malfunction caused the fireworks barge to catch fire and explode five minutes into the display.

However, the fireworks will not go ahead on NYE 2018 due to financial issues and “restrictions”.

According to the Central Coast Express Advocate, the organiser of the 2017 event David Lambert pulled the plug back in May, after his application was in the hands of the Central Coast Council for three months.

“There were too many restrictions,” he told the Central Coast Express Advocate.

“We needed a special barge from Sydney which would have cost $17,000. Then I thought about having it at The Haven, but the whole Haven would have had to be cordoned off which would have cost $20,000. We also didn’t attract any major sponsors so that was really the end.”

Lambert believes that last year’s event, which saw two firework technicians jump from the barge as it was engulfed in flames, didn’t affect the cancellation.

“Even if it hadn’t have happened, we wouldn’t be running it again. WE don’t have the money. We would need to come up with $60,000.”
