These 13 baby names are actually illegal!

3 min read

So, it’s actually illegal to give your children these names

1. Your Medicare number

So it turns out that you can’t name your child after your Medicare number. So the string of numbers that make up your Medicare number is a no-go for a baby name.  However if you want to name your kid ‘Medicare’ it’s completely up for grabs.

2. Blank Space

I’ve got a Blank Space baby and I’ll write your name. And write a name is exactly what you will have to do.  The Australian registrar will not allow you to give your child a “blank space” as a name. Not only is ‘blank space’ extremely hard to verbalise but a name cannot contain symbols or numbers.  Fun fact the Australian registry can also refuse a name if they think a child will be bullied for said name choice.

3. Pieandsauce

It’s a bit un-Australian but the name Pieandsauce was another name vetoed by the Australian name registry.

4. Hitler

Do we really have to explain this one?? We mean Hitler is one of the most notorious villains in our history. Although this name is not banned in the US with many supremacist families naming their children after Nazi figures.

5. Nutella

It’s a delicious hazelnut spread but unfortunately it doesn’t cut it as a name. A French court ruled that a baby girl could not be named Nutella arguing that she would be mocked for her name.  With a small nod to Nutella the girl was named ‘Ella.’

6. Facebook

Unfortunately for a family in Mexico they were left devastated when they were forbidden to name their child ‘Facebook’ The registry director said “The law is very clear because it prohibits giving children names that are derogatory or that don’t have any meaning and that can lead to bullying.”

7. Panties

Um, so we aren’t really sure why anyone would want to name their child this but lucky the name was disallowed by the Australian registry. Other previous prohibited names included ‘Dickhead’, ‘Virgin’, ‘Scrotum’, and ‘Circumcision’.

8. Talula Does The Hula for Hawaii

Yep we are actually serious about this one. A young girl in New Zealand was stuck with this name for NINE years before a judge ruled that the name must be changed. In Australia this name would have been banned for being to long.

9.@

Unfortunately in Australia you can’t give your child a symbol for a name.

10. Apple, Banana, Pear and any other fruit or vegetable:

In Malaysia it is illegal to name your child after an animal, fruit or vegetable.

11. Elaine

In Saudi Arabia a lot of Western Names are banned because they “contradict the religion or culture of the kingdom.”

12. Duke

In many countries giving your child a Royal title as a first name is illegal.

13. Tom

In Portugal, parents cannot register their children with nicknames. While Tom might be illegal, Thomas is completely fine.
