This tourist has blasted a café after he was charged $67 for coffee and water

2 min read

And the cafe is hitting back!

A tourist has absolutely blasted a café in Venice for charging him a whopping AU$67 for two small coffees and two waters.

According to The Sun, Juan Carlos Bustamente from Chile was flabbergasted when he received the bill at Caffe Lavena, an eatery that sits on the edge of the iconic St Mark’s Square. He was so shocked and upset that he posted a picture of his receipt to Facebook.

“I don’t know what you think but €43 for two coffees and two bottles of water!” the post read.

He was charged €11.50 ($18) for each coffee, and €10 (15.60) for each 250ml bottle of water. Many thought that the price must be so inflated due to the area being a hot tourist destination, however the coffees were a massive 10x the prices of other coffees in the area.

The post has quickly gone viral, with Caffe Lavena landing in hot water. The number of comments on the post grew, with many accusing the café of blatant theft.

However, a spokesman for Caffe Lavena was quick to hit back at Bustamente, insisting that customers were always warned that they had to pay more if they wanted to sit outside.

“People get annoyed when the bill arrives because they do not listen when we hand them the menu even though it states clearly enough that prices are higher to sit outside,” the spokesman said.

“They just wave us away and if we insist they get irritated. If they just want a coffee they can have it at the bar for €1.25 ($1.95).

“If they want to sit outside and enjoy the music of the orchestra, look at the bell tower and the Basilica of St Mark’s, then they are paying for an entirely different experience.”

What do you think?
