Horoscopes in bed

Get ready to be REALLY grossed out!

We spend most of our lives snuggled up in bed – but some of us can get a bit slack when it comes to laundry time.

Daily Mail got a terrifying scoop from Dr Lisa Ackerley, who describes herself as a Hygiene Doctor – she says dirty sheets can lead to viruses and infections. Eeep!

“Think of all the things you do in bed. Apart from being the place where we go to sleep, it can double up as the home office, the tea room, the dining table or even your dog or cat’s bed.

“Depending upon what your bed is used for, and also how clean you are when you get in it (and indeed whether you wear nightwear), your bed can get pretty filthy and may actually be causing your body harm.”

First up – bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses breed in our beds, thanks to the sweat, saliva, skin cells and other, erm, bodily secretions that sneak into our beds. These can lead to skin and wound infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and bacteraemia (blood stream infection).

Athlete’s foot and cold germs can also live in your sheets and get transferred to other people sleeping in it. Yeast infections, dust mites, and a swag of other nasties can all lurk in our linen.

Dr Ackerley recommends vacuuming your room to remove dust, washing your bed sheets once at week at 60°C or higher, and washing your PJs every three days.

Showering before bed, using pillow and mattress protectors and making any pets lie on a blanket on top of the bed are also helpful measures.

OK, we’re off to clean the living crap out of our sheets! Ewww……
