“I feel sorry for Australian parents.”
Supermarket giant Woolworths has backflipped on its new baby formula policy following the release of shocking stockpiling footage being released on Reddit.
In August of this year, the supermarket quadrupled its limit from two to eight tins per customer, causing outrage among many parents struggling to purchase the highly sought-after formula.
However, after worrying footage emerged of numerous customers queuing with boxes of formula at a Woolworths in Melbourne, the limit has once again been dropped to two per customer.
“There was a line from one end of the supermarket to the other full of people carrying boxes of baby formula,” Reddit user BEBa420, who shared the footage, captioned the clip.
“I asked the cashier if there was some sort of offer on baby formula and she said: ‘No it happens every week and they come at the same time every time’.”
The video has surfaced after years of baby formula being stripped from shelves by “daigou” or personal shoppers, who resell the products to customers in China at inflated prices, leaving many Australian parents struggling to find stock.
It’s release has sparked debate over the imposed limits with many saying the policies imposed by supermarkets are ineffective and the government needs to get involved.
“The limits don’t really work because you can just go to another supermarket straight after or just come back two hours later,” the videos poster stated.
