Woolworths introduces 10c milk levy to help Australian farmers

2 min read

A Drought Relief milk range will be released in October.

In the midst of the continuing drought crisis, Woolworths has announced a 10c milk levy designed to assist struggling drought-stricken farmers.

The supermarket will offer a ‘Drought Relief’ range to customers in New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT from the middle of October.

Woolworths Director of Fresh Food Paul Harker revealed that the levy was something wanted by many customers who were eager to see the big supermarkets do their part.

“There’s no doubt many dairy farmers are doing it tough in the face of the drought and we’re keen to support them through this difficult time. Many of our customers have told us they want to help and are willing to pay more for their milk to do so.

“The new range of Drought Relief milk will provide customers with that choice, safe in the knowledge the extra money will flow through to dairy farmers in drought affected areas.”

Until the range is introduced in stores, Woolworths Full Cream and Woolworths Lite Milk increase by 10c per litre, with prices increasing to $2.20 and $3.30 respectively.

The supermarket stated it will be working with its own milk suppliers to set up a committee in order to decide where the money should go.
