Woolworths slammed over plans to make staff work on Christmas Day

2 min read

Customers are vowing to never shop there again.

Woolworths is being slammed by the public after seeking permission from the government to have employees work on Christmas Day.

The supermarket giant plans to have workers stocking shelves on Christmas Day in NSW in order to prepare for the shopping frenzy that is Boxing Day.

The decision sits with the Department of Industrial Relations, and if it is granted, employees would have the option to stack shelves from 12am – 5am on Christmas morning.

Although working on the 25th is technically voluntary, many people, including the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, have pointed out that staff may feel pressured in work in order to keep their jobs secure.

“I bet half of the staff working will feel pressured into working to make sure they’re not on the bad side of their manager and will still get hours in ‘19,” one Facebook user wrote.

Other customers suggested that it would be more viable to make it “all hands on deck” on Boxing Day morning rather than make staff work on Christmas, while some frustrated shoppers even vowed to never shop at the supermarket again if the petition was passed.

However, some shoppers disagreed with the outrage, saying that it might be a great way for those who don’t celebrate Christmas to make some extra cash.

“Not everyone celebrates Christmas with family and would welcome extra money for working a public holiday. I’m sure there would be plenty of volunteers that could jump at the chance,” a Facebook user wrote.

The decision is yet to be handed down.
